Health insurance in Dubai, what it costs and what it skips
The legal minimum, what it does not cover, and where the jump to a real plan is worth it.
Health cover is mandatory for every resident and tied to your visa, so you will buy something. The question is what. The Essential Benefits Plan is cheap and narrow: a small network, low annual cap and no maternity worth the name. Most people find out the difference in a waiting room.

Is insurance really mandatory?
Yes. Dubai residency requires health cover, and the visa process checks it. Your employer covers you but not automatically your family.
What does the cheapest plan not cover?
Maternity beyond the basics, most private hospitals, dental and optical, and it carries a low annual cap. It satisfies the law, not much else.
Can I insure my family separately?
Yes, and it is often what people do when an employer covers only the employee. Budget AED 12,000 to 25,000 a year for a family of four on a mid-tier plan.
